Istria / Croatia

That the Adriatic coast is the most beautiful coast of the Mediterranean was not invented by the Croats. No, they heard it from others: from a multitude of boating and yachting enthusiasts, world travellers, famous seafarers, even from the Roman emperors who built their villas and summer houses, even entire settlements for rest and relaxation on the coast of Croatia. Nowhere else in the Mediterranean are there so many islands, so many bays, picturesque beaches and sun-drenched rocky reefs, an amazing culinary diversity and cultural originality as in Croatia. The Istrian peninsula, located in northwestern Croatia, is not only one of the most beautiful parts of the country in terms of scenery, it is also the region with the most developed infrastructure, the most extensive and varied availability of recreational opportunities, a multi-layered cultural offer, an impressive history and the largest selection of excellent restaurants.

Active lifestyle in nature

Istria is ideal for all sports lovers and active holidaymakers. Due to its geographical location and favourable climate conditions, numerous sports activities can be practised all year round.
There is something for every taste. Sports such as cycling, trekking, tennis, golf, horse riding, diving, windsurfing, free climbing, water skiing, hiking, sailing or paragliding offer a wide range of opportunities to spend your time.

In addition, the culinary richness of the local cuisine is one of the country’s major assets.

When you visit Istria, the friendly hosts will offer you Istrian prosciutto with cheese and olives or delicious seafood. You will have the opportunity to taste the Istrian truffle, e.g. in the Zigante restaurant (the largest truffle known in the world was found near the restaurant). The lovers of asparagus should not forget to enjoy the delicious dishes with the local wild green asparagus. Many dishes owe their special flavour to olive oil, the secrets of which you can discover on a trip along the Olive Road. Delicious dishes are accompanied by a glass of good wine, be sure to try Istrian Malvasia, red wine Teran, or sweet Croatian dessert wine Muskat. A visit to one of the exceptional wineries, e.g. Benvenuti near Motovun, is certainly a worthwhile excursion. A unique experience is also offered by travelling along the wine roads with countless restaurants and wine cellars, where you will enjoy the smells and tastes of traditional dishes and excellent wine.

Restaurant tips, wineries, excursion destinations, golf and tennis possibilities as well as other information can be found in the Istria magazine, available in all tourist information offices or in our office in Porec. We will also be happy to answer any questions you may have about the region’s various insider tips.
